I put the old girl to work today.

Kinja'd!!!

The 4.9 doesn’t have any trouble getting things moving but your sure as hell not going anywhere fast. It cruised well at 60mph, but over that and she started struggling. I can’t believe these engines were used in commercial dump trucks, package trucks, and even day cab semis I think (unsure on this last one).

I’ve had the 4.9 I6 experience many times over the years and I could never figure out what people saw in them. So many people go all ga-ga over them, but there was a reason it was the base model cheapo engine. “They run forever and have good power!” They’re more fragile than a 302/351, make less power and suck down ungodly amounts of gas. My first car was an ‘87 F-150 with a 4.9 and the absolute best MPG it ever managed was 11.

But, all that said- the ‘92-’96 Fod pickups are still tied with the dentside Fords for best looking trucks ever.

Love the truck. When I get back to the states something like that is high on my list as a second vehicle.

My dad had an ‘87 Bronco with the 4.9. Oil pump went in it, he replaced it and the pump he put in was bad. He gave up after that and it got sold. I miss that truck so much.

Wow. That’s terrible mpg. I’ve gotten 16 at my best, average about 14. I’ve never heard that they are more fragile than the larger engines before though. I do agree they lack in power, they just don’t have much, but they do have a great torque curve so power is much more even along the rpm range.

I’d love to get a Ford Centurion someday. I love this body style and who wouldn’t love a crew cab pickup with a Bronco rear end grafted to the back?
